Frequently Asked Questions
How many lessons will I need?
This varies from person to person but the current average is 45 hours of professional tuition (Driving Standards Agency average, 2006), with 22 hours of private practice. Dave will give you an idea of how long you are likely to need after your first few lessons.
Will I be picked up and dropped off at home?
The simple answer is Yes! Alternatively, if there is another pick up and drop off point locally (work, school etc) then that can also be arranged.
Do I take the test in the car I will be learning in?
Yes you will use the vehicle you learn to drive for your test.
When should I take the theory test?
It’s a good idea to practice and take the theory test as soon as possible. You must complete and pass your theory test before you can take your practical test, you can of course start taking your practical lessons before passing your theory.
How much are the theory and practical tests?
The current prices are: Theory test £31.00 and Practical test £62.00 and both tests can be booked via the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) website.
Are there resources to help me pass the theory test?
Yes there are many resources (books, DVD’s etc) that will help you in gaining the knowledge to pass the theory test. A good starting point is our resources page and the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) website or you can speak to Dave who will advise you on where to get the information you will need.
What does the theory test involve?
The theory test is made up of 2 parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test.
The multiple choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and the hazard perception part records your responses through the use of a computer mouse button.
What is Hazard Perception?
Hazard perception is the ability of a driver to identify situations at the earliest possible opportunity that might require them as a driver to take some form of avoiding action such as changing speed or direction. This involves techniques such as ensuring adequate clearance, using an appropriate speed, planning well ahead, and having good anticipation. All these techniques take practice and guidance which Dave will provide during the in-car training. Using these skills properly on the road will give you the confidence to drive safely, and be aware of the various hazards on all roads.
How long does the practical test last?
The driving part of the test will last about 40 minutes. During the test the examiner will give you directions which you should follow and ask you to carry out the set exercises. Throughout the test you should drive in the way you have been taught. If you make a mistake, don't worry about it, it might be a less serious driving fault and may not affect your result.
How many mistakes can I make?
The examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test. However if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.
What happens when I pass?
When successful in passing the practical test the examiner will take your provisional licence and provide you with a pass certificate that acts as a full licence until the real thing arrives in the post.
